The Commercial Press and Zhonghua Book Company were two largest publishing houses in modern China. As the two giants of the publishing circles in modern China, how to deal with their relationship was very important. This was not only related to their respective future, but also affected the whole publishing circles'development in modern China. In the modern academic history, monographs and papers which study comprehensively the relationship between The Commercial Press and Zhonghua Book Company are rarely seen. The comprehensive study for their relationship, not only can help us understand their reason of success,but also has the important meaning to study comprehensively the whole publishing circles'development. In view of this reason, this paper seeks to analyze their relationship from two aspects of the competition and the cooperation. The relationship between The Commercial Press and Zhonghua Book Company was coexistence of the competition and the cooperation. The competition is the driving force for the development of enterprises. The competition was the mainstream of the two enterprises'relationship. The competition includes healthy competition and vicious competition. The competing relationship of the two enterprises was coexistence of healthy competition and vicious competition, but the mainstream is healthy competition. The cooperation can promote enterprise development in another way. The Commercial Press and Zhonghua Book Company realized gradually the point in their developing process. Both sides carried out a series of cooperation for their respective benefit. The practice proved that The Commercial Press and Zhonghua Book Company were successful in dealing with the relationship. Because both the two enterprises correctly handled their relationship, they obtained the success in the publishing circles in modern China. Their experience indicates that the correct relationship between peers is the relationship of the heakthy competition, which includes cooperation.
