With the rapid development of automotive industry in China, reverse engineering is widly used in automotive panel design, thus the leadtime of a new vihecle can be reduced significantly. This thesis focuses on the research about the theory and technology of reverse engineering in automotive panel design and involves the measurement techniques, selection of measurement data and optimization techniques, and the CAD modeling techniques.1) A new measurement strategy is proposed to adapt the reverse engineering in automotive panel design. Based on the synthetically analyse of the advantages and shortcomings of various methods and their application conditions, a new measuring method is presented and practised, so the measurement efficiency and accuracy can be improved.2) In selection of measurement data and optimized procession technique, the data collected through reverse engineering was clutter and complicated, data of this kind was unfavorable to define camber and produce data of CAD/CAM database. Therefore it was necessary to process and optimize the measurement data through some appropriate way. The paper researched the data procession technique in reverse engineering from two aspects: the filteration-selection of data and the polymerization-optimization of data, which were proved effective in practice.3) Camber modeling in reverse engineering and CAD modeling technique. Through the analysis of various modeling methods and various software of reverse engineering and CAD modeling, the paper summarized the thoughts of reverse engineering and methods. Based on the features of the automotive panel design in reverse engineering, the paper also provided the quality-control thought of camber created by reverse engineering, as well as several quality-control methods in the process of CAD modeling.4) The camber reconstruction of an truck cab by Reverse Engineering was successfully fulfilled in practice, and the CAD data model was established after the completion of automotive panel design by reverse engineering.The thesis presents a systematic technology on reverse engineering for automotive panel design. Compared to current methods, the new techniqes are more efficient and robust. Since these techniqes can make accurate and smooth panel surfaces, the proposed technology can promote the usage of reverse engineering in automotive panel design and also mould manufacturing industry.
