With the development of computer technology, communications technology, and other relative technology, the simulation technology based on virtual reality is a hot research issue at present. The traditional campus's illustration is always too simple and lacks the reality. As a result its practical value is often limited. Introducing virtual reality technology into the research of numerical campus can provide a new method for campus design and planning. Virtual campus 3D model space not only offer the natural real, visual and vivid representation of real world but also can develop time and space of campus, sequentially extend its function.This paper expatiates on concept and characters of the Virtual reality system. It expounds the status of the development and application of VR also. The virtual campus system based on web is realized according to some concrete conditions of campus. It includes 3D modeling, roaming, multimedia playing and real time interaction. The web publication of the system has been implemented. The main contents of this research are the following:(1)The technology of Graphic and Image-Based Modeling and Rendering is adopted, and 3D model of virtual campus system were accomplished. The geometry modeling of complex object is explored in VR, and commonly means were summed up such as trees, flower and grass etc. This paper also analyzed texture mapping problems of big and small geometry object, which can reduce workload of building scene.(2) The combination of VRML and JAVA was used as main exploitation instrument in Virtual Reality system. Two kinds extend mechanism of VRML scene were adopted to realize the function of browse and interaction. Automatism roaming and interaction roaming were used in the scene ramble system also.(3)The multimedia technology was synchronized in Virtual Reality system, which can achieve the function of play and control of courseware.(4)Using mechanisms of DFE/USE and prototype reduced the browser burden to achieve optimum system. This paper summarized some methods which can improve browsing rapidity and accomplish big scene browsing.(5)The link between virtual campus system and database adopted the ASP technique. Virtual campus system was published in Web and achieved the intention of distributed, 3D interacted, multimedia and vivid virtual campus system.
