With the development of science and technology, robotic technology is more and more applied in medical domain. Therefore, the Nursing Helpmate Robot which can take the place of doctors and nurses is come forth. But it is still a problem of identifying the obstacles in the front of the road where the Nursing Helpmate Robot move forward. The research of this paper is supported by the project of "Key Technologies of Nursing Helpmate Robot", funded by the Hei longjiang Natural Science Fund The recognition of simple object by using of the ultrasonic range module is studied in this paper.First introduced the Nursing Helpmate Robot's development and the development and applications of ultrasonic, and given a brief description of Nursing Helpmate Robot's system. The Nursing Helpmate Robot had to identify the obstacles in the complex environment of hospital. So the accuracy of the identification will directly impact on its performance. There are many methods to measure the obstacles, based on the need of this paper, studied on the method of measurement of obstacles by ultrasonic. The study on the work carried out as follows:1. Designed a ultrasonic range module based on STC89C51.2. With the study on the measurement of the obstacle based on ultrasonic and combine to the characteristics of the measuring environment, made the new method to measurement.3. Researched on the factors that impact on the ultrasonic measuring (Temperature, humidity, instrument, circuit etc.), and put forward to the method of solving the interference.4. Finished some experiments about measurement on the flat, corner and cylinder. Through these works, provided a good way to measure the obstacles for the Nursing Helpmate Robot, provided a viable option to the design and development of the Nursing Helpmate Robot in the future.
