With the social progress and economic development, the traditional way to monitor motor vehicles can not meet the urgent needs of vehicles security, management aspect and so on, resulting in the surge of social problems. For example, the vehicle is stolen, robbed, logistics and special vehicles are lack of effective monitoring and scheduling, the urban traffic management system is complicated and bloated and so on, on these issues, people spend a great deal of energy and resources to seek an effective solution. GPS (Global Positioning System) provides a reliable and effective method of vehicle location, and the use of GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) wireless communication technologies can deliver the positioning data to the receiving terminal quickly, therefore the two can be combined to form a GPS /GSM monitoring system, in order to find a good solution to solve the problem above.On the basis of the analysis of vehicle GPS/GSM monitoring platform's system constitutes, and the study of system function and key technologies, this paper proposes a design of GPS/GSM vehicle monitoring system's platform based on FPGA. Its main function is to send the location, time, status and other information of a vehicle which is installed the monitoring platform, through a wireless network to the user's mobile phone or command and control center in real time, thereby, the vehicle can be positioning, tracking at any time, and the operation of vehicle can be effectively monitored.This monitoring platform system uses FPGA embedded with Core8051 as information processing and control center, to complete the data processing such as GPS data, short message and so on, as well as the control of other module of the platform; its development is high efficiency and reliability, and its structure is compact and occupies less resources; communication module utilizing a mature industrial Siemens TC35 module,which is controlled by AT instruction set, to realize the function of short message sending and receiving and short message content reading, and M12 module of the Motorola Oncore family to collect GPS data with high reliability and positioning accuracy, can ensure observing signals on the condition of inclement weather or complexity traffic environment. In addition, the FPGA also be extended temperature testing, data memory and other function modules, as well as other peripheral module interfaces, to make the platform system has more function. In the process of software development, modular approach is used, such as GPS data collection, short message sending and receiving application software modules etc. are designed respectively; then the system functions are refined, system function modules are built by the software modules, and then complete system software engineering design.The monitoring platform passes the system testing in part of Shapingba district of Chongqing city. Test results show that the system design is correct, and corresponds with the actual requirements. The GPS/GSM vehicle monitoring system's platform system based on FPGA has features of short development cycle, easy to expand, upgrade, etc., can be widely used in vehicle monitoring, security, scheduling, traffic management and command and control systems.
