With the rapid development of software technology, new operating systems appear. To meet the new requirement of these operating systems, FPGA development software must be migrated. Software migrating is an effective method since it can make use of the resources already owned and its cost of development and staff training is lower than designing a new one. Thus, the software migrating becomes an urgent need in practical application. It is of significance to study its methodology.Based on the study of software migration theory, I conducted the research on how to implement the migration of FPGA development software. Two migration methods optimized for the property of FPGA development software, the Virtual Machine based and the redesigned module based migration technologies, are analyzed. These two technologies can be used in different environments. The difference between these two technologies is analyzed. In order to solve some existing problems in the transplanting process, a solution based on the combination of the Cygwin Virtual Machine based and the redesigned module based migration technologies is proposed. A cross-platform migration of the VPR (Versatile Place and Route) application is implemented by using this method. In practical evaluation, the migration technologies in this paper are proved effective. The migrated software can meet the requirements of the new platform. The technologies in the migration methodology proposed by this paper are new in the field, and could be the base of future study.
