In the 21st century,because of the intensifacation of market segmentation, impact of other media, diversification of readers'needs, attenuation of the state protection make it difficult for the traditional book publishing management mode to meet the requirements of the market completion. Therefore, it is urgent for publishers to set up an adaptive and meticulous management mode, so as to improve the efficiency and effectiveness. The Book Publishing Project Management(BPPM) was created to meet these requirements. It is a target-modern oriented management mode of enterprises and is complete suited to markets. BPPM is already widely used by oversea publishing companies, but is at the initial stage in domestic publishing industry. This paper aims to make a thorough investing at the features of book publishing activities, the theories and methods of project management. With reference to the current situation in China's publishing management,and by analyzing the publishing processes and key process control. Finally, the paper put forwards strategies of BPPM to offer some new ideas on management for publishing houses which has already transformed the management system or are going to undergo to transform.The research methods of the paper are literary study, expert consultation, comparison analysis and study of typical cases. This paper consists of three major parts.The first part makes a systematic and comprehensive analysis of features, rules in publishing activities and theories, methods of project management. Then the paper outlines the necessity and feasibility of introducing BPPM in light of the current situation of China's traditional publishing management. Besides, the author also explores the features, significence situation and trends of BPPM. Then the author concludes that book publishing is a complicated systematic project which can not be completed without coordinated works in editing, publishing, distributing, and so on. And book publishing process itself can be viewed as a project. Under the background of publishing transformation, the traditional management mode cannot meet the requirements of the market; therefore it becomes more and more necessary to introduce the state-of-art modern enterprises management mode. The BPPM, featured for its refined, objected-oriented management style, is normally suitable for publishing companies abroad and has already been viewed as a proven mode for its high efficiency. Besides, our country does have a profound ground for the introduction of BPPM, and the BPPM is suitable for China's book publishing industry. The second part examines the life cycle and flow of book publishing activity.To achieve easy control and management, the publishing process and the differences in book publishing processes between domestic and oversea markets. Then after expert views and studies of typical case, the paper combines project management with publishing activities and provides some useful guides to BPPM. Then the author concludes that the focus of the management activities differs at different stage of the book publishing project. The organization of topics is very important because at this part, publishers will decides exact topic of the book. And this stage is of ultimate priority and can also be divided into two small stages, namely the project initiating stage and planning management stage. And great importance should be attached on various functional areas such as the scope of change management in commission articles stage, time management in authoring and editing stage, quality management in printing and binding stage, integrated management in issuing and promoting stage when publishers introducing BPPM based on the existing management mode.The third part proposes strategies over introducing BPPM after making a thorough examination of the market environment, current situation and priorities of China's publishing industry. These strategies can be summarized as: In terms of concepts, publishers should firstly learn from books and typical cases, and try to gradually establish BPPM concepts. In terms of running mechanism, publishers should attach great importance to teamwork, detailing the process management of book publishing activities, making full use of cost management ,establishing binding assessment system and introducing publishing management information system. In the area of organization, publishers should form a team of managers, improve marketing networks, selecte suitable organizational frameworks of BPPM, and ultimately implemente complete project management.
