In a globalized world, no country can be separated from the others. All of the countries in the world belong to a huge economic community where all the countries connected to each other closely. It is the fact that China has to face today. And the fact is also the background of this thesis. In a close international community, a nice image is the best introduction for a country and can win the friendship of the others. Moreover, a fine image is also an exhibition of the power of a country. China did not do enough to exhibit itself in the past 100 years and the western countries control the image-building of China today. In the result, China is in an inferior position in many conflicts about politics, culture, nation, religion and human rights.Building a nice image for China is the goal which China's government and media work for. The goal of us is giving the other countries a correct impression of China and win benefits for China by doing this. The thesis consists of three parts, which are The Definition Of Country Image, The Situation and Cause Of Image of China, and The Corrected Ways of Building China's Image. The writer will do the research in three steps: situation, cause and resolution. The first part of the thesis is focus on the definition of country image. Firstly, the writer gives three features of country image (The combination of subjectivity and objectivity, relative fixity, centrality). Secondly, the writer gives the parts of a country image (The image of a government, the image of economy, the image of the people, the image of culture, the image of sociality). Thirdly, there is the purpose of country image. The second and the third parts are the most important parts of the thesis. The second part is about the situation and course of China's image. Firstly, by analysis of comments of China's scholars and the figures of western's reports about China, the writer find that the main trend of the western reports are not good news and the western countries are still the major contributor of China's image. The next part is about the course of China's image. The writer thinks the major courses are:The differences of ideology. The causes of differences on ideology are both historical and actual. The ideology differences include political ideology difference, religious ideology differences and differences about value of worth. Conflict on country's benefits. It is an important reason of prejudice for China. The development of China makes the west world upset. There are both political and economic reasons. So the western countries take China as an enemy. What the western countries do destroy the image of China in the world.Another trouble of China's image is the inequality of discourse. There are big gaps of economic power and soft power between China and western countries. Because of their economic power, western countries control most of the powerful international media so that they could promote themselves worldwide. Western countries have strong soft power, too. In that case, they could promote their value of worth much more easily. For China itself, the reality is that communication system is not good enough and communication skills need to be enhanced. The third part is about the ways of building China's image. In this part, the writer focuses on the influence of economic power and soft power, communication system and communication skills.Economic power is the base of a country's image. The writer explains the two uses of economic power. Firstly, economic power is the base of building powerful media. Only the powerful countries could own powerful media. Secondly, economic power is essential for a country's soft power. A strong economic power has attracts to the other countries. A country's power of communication and influence will never be improved unless there is a development in economy.Soft power is very important for the influence of a country. The writer explains the uses by both theory and examples. Theoretically speaking, soft power is a power of assimilation, which is essential for the promotion of value of worth. If the people accept the value of worth of one country, it means that they accept what the country wants to promote. In that way the people will understand the behavior and thinking of a country more easily. In the example part, the writer takes America as an example to explain how the soft power works. By the firms and TV series, America promotes its value of worth in the world. This is a successful case of soft power. By doing that, America builds a nice image of itself. For communication system and skill, the writer does the research in this way. Firstly, there are three parts of communication system that need to be improved: the emergency system, news confluence and spoken person system, public relation system. For communication skills, the writer thinks we should do these things to improve the skills: do researches on the psychology of the audience; provide with both good news and bad news; choose best materials of the sociality and with the best point of view; Use appropriate words in the translation; use better skills and tell attractive China stories to the world. The writer takes both text analysis and case analysis as the ways of research. For text analysis, the writer quotes the reports of China of different years by western media and come to a conclusion that the proportion of good news, bad news and common news of China by western media has changed in recent years. By the analysis, the writer finds the focal point of western media has changed to economy from politics. By case analysis, the writer finds most reports about China by western media indicate the differences of ideology between China and the west world.
