With the development of automotive electronics, the traditional point-to-point communications scheme can't meet the communications requirements in modern automobiles. To improve the performances of vehicles, automotive network appears. A automotive network is used to build interconnections among automotive electronic devices and equipments and can substantially reduce the complexity of wiring harness, enhance the control efficiency of various vehicle sub-systems, and thus to obtain a better automobile performance. By employing a network inside an automobile, it can also be expected to reduce the production and maintenance costs.Studied in this thesis are the applications of both CAN protocol and LIN protocol to build up an automobile interconnection network infrastructure. Based on the SAE classification criteria,a prototype automotive network infrastructure is built. It consists of high speed CAN bus, low speed CAN bus, and LIN bus. To facilitate the message interchange among these buses, a CAN/LIN mixing gateway is designed and implemented so that the three sub-networks can be coordinated to build up a bigger and more practical network. Also discussed in the thesis are the design and implementation of CAN nodes and LIN nodes.
