With the rapid development of the information technology, most of the information which is semi-structured and unstructured information, it is difficult for the traditional information systems to cope with the new requirements. New solutions are urgently needed, which can effectively manage various types of information on heterogeneous systems. Content Management System is thus presented, its goal is to effectively manage and utilize semi-structured and unstructured information. Content Management is becoming a new research direction in information management area, and has drawn much attention from industry and academia. The main purpose of Enterprise Content Management is to conduct integrated and effective management on heterogeneous types of information in an enterprise. Content Management System is a set of tool which provides a framework for enterprise content management. In this thesis, Content specifically refers to the digital information that can be accessed by computer system; it is classified to structured, semi-structured and unstructured. Metadata Model describes the characteristics of the Content and the relationship among contents, and could be regarded as information about the schema of Content. Metadata Model is a feasible way to support the access to Content. XML technology provides effective support for the description of metadata. In this thesis, Metadata Model is formalized and stored in the form of a XML schema document and corresponding instance documents. The works in this thesis mainly include as follows. At first, the background and fundamental theory of Content Management are introduced, the current situation of the research on the Enterprise Content Management are discussed. Then Metadata Model of the design process is elaborated. The results of meta-data model design for document management are proposed. The way of XML storage is researched. Finally, an XML-based Document Content Management System is designed and implemented, which is based on the foundation of Enterprise Content Management System framework. In this system ,Metadata Model are used to describe the unstructured document information, based on metadata the system can manage and share heterogeneous documents, In order to meet the needs of colleges and universities.
