With the development of IC design technology and the increasing of the circuit density, traditional ASIC design methodology can no longer satisfy the requirements of the design complexity and the time urgency to market. The fast development of SoC design theory and technology based on IP reuse methodology indicates that integrated circuits has entered into System-on-Chip era. As an important component of Set-Top Box, MPEG-2 video decoding techonology has been implemented widely. For the purpose of fitting into the current interface, bus and system architecture design, this thesis made some interface design, architecture realization and verification analysis for the video decoding system of digital television based on the SoC design methodology.SoC design mainly focused on system design methodology, IP reuse methodology, etc. With system design methodology, we made requirement analysis according to the MPEG-2 standard and the current market status. Functional and performance definitions about the system were made according to the relative theory and the features of each sub functions of the system. What's more, this thesis aimed at the popular application of MPEG-2 MP@ ML and MP@HL standard, and proposed the main steps to transform the original video decoding system with outdated interface standard into an efficient new standard.Since we have an access to third-party video decoder IP, it brings the idea of this project. We first design the functional wrapper to transform the VCI component interface into AMBA2.0 AHB standard, then build up a new system architecture with necessary hardware Ips, and develop interrupt handling software which runs on ARM9 to control the decoding process. At this point, we are ready to proceed HW-SW co-verification for SoC testing stage. Using Mentor Seamless CVE development tool, we perform several testcases with maximum functional coverage to monitor the working state of the video decoder, and compare the performance parameters with the original IP, at lease make sure that the new IP works normally with all-square performance.The essentiality of this research lies on stringing along with the current trend of the technology, so that we can throw off the restriction caused by the old-fashioned interface standard, and re-apply the functional core to a diversity of modern requirements. The designing method might be useful for similar SoC systems, and it provide optimization clues and performance achievements to some extent only for reference.
