With the development of Internet, the requirement of people becomes more and more. All kinds of broad bandwidth services begin to coexist with the traditional data services,so our networks not only needs to sustain the traditional services, but also needs to sustain new services such as video and IP phone.Because these new services need broader bandwidth and real time treatment,so they require the network to provide high quality of service.Traffic Engineering can control and optimize network resources utility. In particular,it is generally desirable to ensure that subsets of network resources do not become over utilized and congested while other subsets along alternate feasible paths remain underutilized.Multi-protocol label switch(MPLS) can offer fast packet switching and bridge over physical and IP layers.Recent developments in MPLS open possibilities to address some of the limitations of IP systems concerning traffic engineering. This paper first introduces the research of standard about MPLS and the advantages of MPLS.Then, this paper introduces the theory and the definition of MPLS. Based on the analysis of the necessary of MPLS Traffic Engineering and the limit of IP Traffic Engineering, this paper studies the basic framework and main components in MPLS Traffic Engineering. This paper focuses on the problems of explicit routing, load balancing and rerouting in MPLS Traffic Engineering, and gives the simulation by NS2.Based on the basic model and extended model in NS2,this paper established several scenarios and compares the applications in the IP network and network with MPLS Traffic Engineering. The result of the simulations justify that MPLS Traffic Engineering can effectively optimize the traffic, enhance the performance of avoiding congestion and rerouting after failure in network.
