With the development of industrial technology and the enhancement of the people's safety awareness, the exploitation of video monitoring system is becoming more and more popular in the visual field. As many application fields have the advancer demands on the video monitoring system, how to realize monitor the certain environment economically and efficiently is becoming a new research direction now.Combined the embedded technology, image compression and network technology, the article designed and realized the embedded network video surveillance system based on the ARM9 processor S3C2410 and embedded Linux operation system. The test showed that the low-cost system, which is suitable for the normal users, can grab, compress and transmit the video image effectively.The paper described the current situation and the trend of the embedded technology and video surveillance system first, and then afforded the overall design scheme according to the basic principle and performance requirements of the embedded surveillance system. The system hardware platform was composed of the embedded processor S3C2410 (a production of Samsung) and periphery hardware circuit. The paper introduced the connection way between S3C2410, memory and periphery hardware circuit, and also explained how to build software platform on the hardware platform including the establishment of cross-compiling environment on host machine and the transplantation of Bootloader starting procedure, the Linux operating system kernel and root files. It also achieved the application program design involved image acquisition, JPEG image compression and video transmission based on the network constructed according to the TCP/IP protocol.The experimental results showed that the system can realize monitor the remote images though Local Area Network and satisfy the demands for reliability and real-time requirements, and can be widely used in the future.
