Remote monitoring systems play a very important role in the industry control field. In many industry areas,especially for those distributed and no-person on site ones data must be collected chronically in order to get the information of situations on spot in time and simple command signals need to be transmitted conditionally. Wire or wireless communication networks are set up and maintained usually for traditional remote monitoring and detecting systems.The investment and maintain cost is very high. After years of development on communication technology,the traditional remote monitoring systems are no longer satisfiable for the requirements and systems with lower cost and higher communication quality are desirable.The thesis researches a wireless remote monitoring system scenario based on GPRS(General Packet Radio Service). A water network monitoring system of a steel plant based on the scenario is designed and the design issues and fuctions of each level of the system is well analyzed. The main work includes:The system selects GPRS network as remote data transmission platform. First the GPRS network structure and the transmission protocol are covered in detail and the GPRS communication advantages and features are introduced. The system is divided into three parts including remote monitoring station,GPRS network and monitoring center and the functionality of each part is illustrated. Second the thesis covers some design issues of the wireless data terminal. In order to be adapt to the industry environment an embedded system based on ARM was adopted.The GPRS module is processor-driven to transmit data.The processor is LPC2210 provided by NXP and the supporting hardware is well designed.The GPRS module is M22 provided by BENQ. Then the software including terminal part and monitoring center part is designed.The data terminal and monitoring center communicate in C/S(client/ server) model.The TCP link with monitoring center is set up once terminal system power on.The server programm based on Window Socket receives data.Last but not least,a water network monitoring system of a steel plant based on GPRS is designed. Its running status is analyzed and some anticipation of its future in industry is made.
