The Study Of The Forming Mechanism Of Media Panics In Mainland China

The mass media is the main builder of the modern people's information environment; their views of the outside world are shaped by the media truth, that's called audience truth, which is gained by the mass media other than their own experiences.Modern society is full of risks, which are not natural but man-made. What they looks like to the audiences is dependent on how the mass media shows them, the way of which can trigger more dangerous risks as well as eliminating the uncertainty of the risk itself.It is the time when our nation is under a period of strong transformation, and the mass media should take on more great missions, suck as make the decision-making of the state known to the public at the first time, take role both as a communicator and coordinator when the public face the new problems during the new stage of the reform, and also satisfy the audiences with more and much useful information. But as we search around our country, we can see though the mass media take active roles, there are continuous panics happened, like the SARS panics, the Avian influenza panics, the Carcinogenic Colgate Toothpaste event, the Vaccine event and so on, and the mass media does a lot to form such panics. As for the great function of the mass media, I think it's necessary to do some research to these kinds of panics, I called them media panics.I centered the media panics of this thesis. First the definition of the media panics is made , then the theories of communication which are related to media panics are picked out, through learning from the foreign models of moral panics and look deep down to the formation of specific matters, I construct the models of the native media panics, after that the factors (the media system, mass media themselves and the audiences ) of how the media panics formed are discussed , and make a comparison of the subjects which are the media panics about with the foreign countries especially in UK and USA, in expectation of providing some useful suggestions to prevent or even eliminate the media panics by knowing better of the causes of native media panics .
