AVS which our nation owns the Intellectual Property is the second generation coding standard of information. It comes out to solve the coding compression problem of the massive data of video and sound. AVS is now the basic standard of video and sound which offers us the greatest opportunity to build the industrial chain of "Technology-Patent-Standard-Chip&Software-System&System Manufacture-Digital Media Program and Literature Industry". The AVS decoder chip is the core of AVS industrialization ,but with the mature of VDSM(Very Deep Sub-Micron) technics, the design of IC(Integrated Chip) is changing from the ordinary scale ASIC(Application Specific IC) to VLSI(Very Large Scale IC) or SOC(System on a Chip),the traditional design method is under great challenge. In the VLSI or SOC design , the system integrates more and more transistor, making the signal chip more complicate, which leads to the design period more longer and longer and makes the timing closure a very big problem. The result is the IC design can't satisfy the need of manufacture. So a new design method must be pulled up to solve this problem.Under the condition above, this paper does research on AVS video decoder IP design using a method of "From Top To Down".First this paper decides to use SystemC as the system design language by comparing several languages which are used nowadays for the system design and modeling; Then It uses SystemC to design and model AVS video decoder from three levels. The first level is the system behavior modeling which does the modularization of the AVS decoder system; The second level adds the timing information into the system and defines the interface of each module; The last level tries the synchronization of system and design a synchronal architecture. Finally, this paper realizes part of the key hardware using verilog and test them completely based on the system model.This paper finished the front part of AVS video decoder chip design, summarized a method of VLSI design "From Top To Down".
