With the great popularization of Internet and the rapid development of the technology of multimedia, network and communication, traditional video surveillance systems have been also in continuous process of updating and developing towards a new direction in recent years. Under the conditions, Network Video Surveillance System (NVSS) comes out, which a combination of corresponding technology is mentioned above. The object of the project is to discuss the problems of surveillance products home, and then design such a system with full functions by improving the correlative technology of video surveillance systems.NVSS is a new surveillance platform based on network camera, which is mainly embodied in the following aspects: digitization of video, network of system and multimedia of application. The organic combination of modern IT with surveillance technology is fully displayed from just above-mentioned merits. Compared with the traditional surveillance systems, the quality of the images and the efficiency of the surveillance system have been greatly improved by NVSS, and the reliable transfer through the Internet has been also guaranteed.Firstly, the thesis introduces current research situations and developing prospects of surveillance systems home and abroad, and then expatiates on the important significance of the project. Secondly, the dissertation studies the correlative theories of NVSS such as the technology of video compression, multimedia transport, video motion detection and embedded operation system, and then brought forward a generic design scheme of software system, in terms of the current surveillance application. Thirdly, the dissertation also discusses the designs and realizations of some important functional modules in detail. By debugging and testing, the results have proved that the surveillance system had provided with good functions and achieved expectant aim. Finally, the dissertation summarizes the main achievement according to performance and the structure of the system. At the same time, it also puts forward the further expectation and imagination in the future.
