Streaming media services over mobile communication network have become feasible since the continuous increment of network bandwidth and rapid enhancement of computing capability of mobile terminal. With a large number of global mobile users, mobile streaming media services also have a huge potential market and become a hot research field.Based on the analysis of network transport protocols and compression technique of multimedia, and referred to the technical specification of 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) PSS (Packet Switched Streaming Service), architecture of mobile streaming media is proposed. It is important to optimize the mobile streaming media client because mobile terminal has less processing capability and memory than Personal Computer. So an optimized structure of Symbian-based client is designed, and the program is developed with the C++ language. The client application is composed of network module, decoder, display module and GUI (Graphical User Interface), and these modules are implemented as Active Objects in Symbian OS. The MPEG-4 decoder is designed as an ECom plug-in DLL to obtain flexibility and efficiency. The GUIs are also developed on different user interfaces such as S60, UIQ and S80.Finally, when it is tested in the real GPRS network, the client application works well and meets the requirements of mobile streaming media services.
