Mobile IP enable mobile node can switch between different subnet with the same IP address and at same time conserve the communication connection. However, Mobile IP technology need transfer packet over core network and thus increase the handoff delay. It becomes necessary to introduce a new mechanism to increase handoff efficiency.Hierarchy Mobile IPv6 (HMIPv6) is the new micro protocol based on IPv6 to reduce the location update message and provide seamless handoff. HMIPv6 introduce a new function node named mobile anchor point. The mobile anchor point acts as the home agent while in foreign network. To support scalable service, HMIPv6 can be configured as tree topology. However the introduction of mobile IPv6 can cost more on processing packets. Under this condition, a balance point should be found to minimize the total cost, the cost of location update and packet processing cost. A model is formulated to represent the total cost and optimal network architecture can be obtained from formula. And finally the formula can be certified by simulation. An analysis model of the HMIPv6 is constructed under a typical network structure. Multiple parameters are checked to find out the relations between optimal network layer, number of mobile nodes, session arrival rate and session mobile rate. In order to certify the result of the analysis model, a simulation (NS2) is used to check the result with analysis model. Instead, mobile nodes are connected with all access routers and only one link is active during the simulation. When handoff occurs, the simulator just shut down the current active link and turns on link of the destination access router. In addition to using NS2 to simulate the network, a new network simulator uns is developed to get better understanding of the function of MIPv6 and other protocol in real network. The result obtained from the new simulator backs up the statement about parameters about HMIPv6.
