With several advantages, such as fast deployment and self-organization, Mobile Ad hoc Networks(MANETs) are suitable for applications involved in tactical battlefield and civilian emergency. However, due to their special form of organization, many protocols used in networks with pre-configured and centrally controlled infrastructure, cannot be directly applied to Mobile Ad-hoc Networks. Thus protocols need to be carefully designed for this kind of networks. When the node number in MANETs reaches certain amount, then the MANETs need to hierarchical management and the whole MANETs is divided into several subnets. Under such situation, when a node moving between subnets, it needs the supporting of mobile ipv6 protocol. However, the existing mip protocol is designed for one hop access network which doesn't suitable for hierarchical multi-hop network. So this dissertation is focused on the efficient handover for mobile ipv6 node in a hierarchical multi-hop network. The main work of this dissertation is following two points:First, propose a novel handover procedure for hierarchical multi-hop network. This procedure results form many references to the basic mipv6 handover procedure but we made a trail of modifications to let it adapt to the multi-hop network. The same as basic mipv6, this procedure would cause the packet loss and handover delay, but it needn't any support of particular hardware, so it is simple and feasible to implement.Second, we have tried to make some simple modifications to transplant rfc4068(fast handovers for mobile ipv6) in our hierarchical multi-hop network. And according to the special character of MAC layer working mode in ad hoc network, we propose a due channel fast handover method using in a node moving between two subnets which have the same working frequency. Our simulation result will prove that this method obviously improves handover performance in its applicable range.Because there still haven't any existing mipv6 module for hierarchical ad hoc networks in any simulation tool, the dissertation give a specific design for mipv6 module using in ad hoc networks on the OPNET platform. Finally, form various typical performance evaluation index, the simulation results show the validation of our methods.
