With the rapid expanding of Internet, a large number of portable computers are used. Meanwhile with the development of wireless equipment, clients demand the mobility of host machines, that is, host machines still could keep communication with others when they are changing their positions. Therefore, as a part of IPv6, mobile IPv6 enhances mobility, so that IPv6 becomes popular generally.The handoff in mobile IPv6 means that during the time from mobile nodes leave former foreign network to they register on home agent or correspondent nodes successfully, the communication between mobile nodes and correspondent nodes is influenced, and the mobile nodes will lose packets.This paper contains two parts. One part introduces the principle of flow-based fast handoff scheme in mobile IPv6 (FFHMIPv6), and proves the favorable performance of the scheme by theoretical and simulation analysis.The other part proposes a new smooth handoff scheme, it is realized by adding forwarding (F) bit and forwarding packet option into binding update message. Base on the theoretical analysis, simulation analysis method is also used in this part. It uses NS-2 software tool to build the IPv6 network simulation environment. On this platform, it tests the validity of the processing of new schemes, proves the feasibility of new scheme, and estimates the performance of scheme objectively.In summary, this paper evaluates the performance of FFHMIPv6, proposes the new smooth handoff scheme, and puts forward some ideas about the application of this scheme in streaming media and how to improve the scheme next. These jobs are valuable for today research and future application.
