The wireless local area network(Wireless LAN, WLAN)is a data communication system which provides peer-to-peer wireless and point-to-point connectivity through wireless medium. At present, there are a variety of industry-standard about WLAN ,thereinto the IEEE802. 11X series standard which issued by IEEE is used most widely, this standard specifies medium access control (MAC) layer and physics (PHY) layer of WLAN.With the increasing application of wireless local area network, the market share of wireless chip is growing gradually. Therefore, the research on Wireless Communication Protocol has become the hotspot. The study of communication protocol isn't easy in the course of the study and development about communication technology. It is very significant to study the IEEE802.11 protocol which will make us possess the wireless network products ourself. At the same time, we are able to master the basical ways and general course of the communication protocol study.The SoPC technology is used to research and design the MAC layer of IEEE std 802. 11 protocol in this paper. First of all, the MAC layer protocol is analyzed and researched seriously, and a detailed exposition of the seven modules of the MAC layer protocol is given. Whereafter, the MAC layer functions will be divided into software, hardware and the realization of two parts based on the thinking of hardware and software co-design. The hardware part will be added to the hardware platform which is in the centered of the Microblaze soft-core in the form of IP core, and the software part will be run on the above-mentioned hardware platform in support of the operating system. Because the programmable-chip technology is used, so it can be very flexible and convenient to carry out its repeated design and verification, just like software design.The design provided in the article is very suitable for the collaborative research of software and hardware on protocol, because of its flexibility and low cost. In addition, it can be use to verify the SOC chips fully before large-scale generation.
