Security is quite important to human's survival and life quality. In China, the coal industry is still very dangerous, several of accidents are seriously threatening miners' safety and the normal operation of coal production. Virtual Reality technology has a broad prospect in many fields, such as: coal mine-optimization design, water resources using, environment protection, mine security and disaster relief, training of safety and danger appraised and so on. This research project is supported by PingMei company and Pingdingshan science and technology bureau fund (No: 2005044 ), through studying the application of virtual reality technology into many fields, such as: mine production, training of security skills and disaster avoiding and so on, we have designed and developed a mine production policy system.In order to solve the problems of the traditional mine simulation system, which are low model resolution, low rendering speed, complex system structure, deficiency in interaction and portability, high developing cost, we firstly analyzed the modeling technology of virtual reality, classified the image based modeling technique, studied the modeling algorithm of visual hulls and implemented a method of fast modeling the mine pit production equipments. The experimental results indicate that this technology can produce higher accuracy models quickly. Secondly we researched the real time rendering technolgy of virtual reality. Through the implementation and optimization of the LOD algorithm, we improved the rendering speed a lot. Finally, using these models and scenes, through the modeling of system UML and design of the engine system, we developed a new mine production simulation system successfully.This project has already been approved by the PingMei Company in 2006, published two thesises, and qualified the third prize of group company advance technology. During the application of this technology into the actual production process, PingMei Company has earned good economic benefits.
