Virtual reality is one of the most popular research subjects now. With the development and maturing of technology, its field of application has been extended to lots of aspects. Cause terrain generating platform can't satisfy the needs of the project at present for its function or lacking of theoretical basis. This thesis gave an overall analysis to kinds of method generating terrain, combined with the need of reality, designed and developed a terrain generation platform. The main content of this thesis are summarized as follows:1. Some key techniques and algorithms of generating sea surface are deeply analyzed and studied. We researched on the method of generating sea surface based on ocean wave spectrum by using P-M wave spectrum and the Donelan directional function formula given by Seaport Hydrology Standard (1998). Besides we analyzed sea surface in two different wind fields and simulated sea surface considering the influence to direction spectrum. It did well when the wind is not strong.2. We researched on the method of generating other terrain, and modeled other terrains by using MPD algorithm. Because the terrain generated by MPD looks too rough, we smoothed the surface. Then we compared the terrain generated by MPD method to quadratic surface interpolation method.3. We designed a simulating platform by using Visual C++ 6.0 and OpenGL. This platform provided an interactive input, then users can control the characteristic parameters of terrain. In order to enhance the reality of virtual environment we processing the DEM data by using illumination technology, texture mapping technology. Moreover, considering we need to process the DEM data later, we storage the DEM data as data files.
