The purpose design of traditional workflow architectures aims at providing full fledged support for the widest possible application spectrum. Consequently, most workflow management systems, both products and research prototypes, are heavyweight, monolithic, and package a comprehensive set of features in an all-or-nothing manner. Additionally, current workflow systems are hard to integrate with other environments.The solution to the previous problems introduced here is a lightweight workflow architecture based on relation database that enables software developers to pick and choose the workflow features they need. The correlative conception and technology of workflow and discusses the problem and hotpot of workflow management system based on analyzing typical workflow system product have been introduced in this thesis. An integrated solution of the system has been given, which include the design of many layers system architecture, function of every module, and database design and resource assignment. In particular it carries out analysis on the design of engine in detail.The workflow management system introduced by this thesis is developed under the .Net platform and SQL Server 2000 as the DBMS, which provided a workflow model designer based on smart client technology and a web application designed to run workflow runtime. First, the workflow designer generate the workflow model through workflow model designer, then, if a user has visited the web application the web browser, the client program should call the interface of the workflow engine. So this system was based on web and it could improve the expansibility of the workflow management system. This workflow management system will be advanced in loose-couple, industry support and high integration.
