In the past several decades, fire science, an interdisciplinary study, has developed rapidly by virtue of new technologies of other relevant disciplines. However, the said progress mostly is achieved merely in the improvement of fire extinguishing technology. In such aspects as training of firemen, popularization of general knowledge of fire safety, fire early warning and command on fire scene, etc., conventional mode is still in use. With the constant emergence of latest fruits in the fields of computer technology, computer graphics, sensing technique, ergonomics, man-machine interaction theory and so on, and to meet the need of reform and development of fire science, application of virtual reality technology in fire safety has become one of hot research sectors in recent years. This thesis introduces on summary basis the elementary knowledge and wide application of virtual reality technology, as well as the type and configuration of virtual reality system; analyses the development status of introducing of such technology in the field of fire control technology at home and abroad; and expatiates the aim, significance, functions, effects, basic structure and features of the system, in order to point out the necessity and feasibility of researching and developing a fire safety system based on virtual reality technology.Next, the thesis, by different modules, concretely illustrates the establishment of virtual three-dimensional model library and detailed design of fire-fighting training subsystem and fire monitoring subsystem. The first two modules mainly involve modeling with 3D MAX and basic fire control knowledge training function achieving by means of VRML virtual reality modeling language combining ASP Active Server Pages and database technology, as well as virtual training item creating using creating tools of EON Studio virtual reality system. The training items created by EON Studio can be widely used in fire fighting training and general knowledge training on fleeing for life during fire fighting. These training items are of vivid scenes, good man-machine interaction, low cost in development and running and easy popularization. In fire monitoring subsystem, firstly, VRML virtual reality modeling language is applied as the main means, in conjunction with JAVA language, to build a virtual interactable 3D scene with elements generated after 3D MAX modeling and the scene is used as the man-machine interaction interface for monitoring. Secondly, the monitoring system is developed by means of VC++, and at last, data exchange between JAVA service program and VC++ monitoring program is realized through SOCKET technology. In this way, it is achieved that monitoring information is fed back in virtual scene and users are allowed to control and operate fire ground monitoring equipment via virtual scene. In the end, the thesis summarizes the development process and application value of the whole system, also, discusses the future of application of virtual reality technology in assistant fire engineering design and fire reason survey.
