With the increasing popularization of the Internet in the whole world, the swift development of the mobile communications and the appearance of the network transmission and diversified new multimedia operation, as video conference, video telephone, HDTV, Video-On-Demand, video searches, digital library and video surveillance and so on, have brought forward many new requests to the image/video encoding technology. And that the H.264/AVC standard is the international newest image encoding standard currently, the purpose of constituting the standard is enhancing the image compression efficiency and improving the quality of the image data transmission on the network. The H.264 standard has the highest compression efficiency in current image encoding standard. And it is about once higher than the H.263 standard. Therefore, the H.264 standard has been applied widely in our actual lives.Although video encoder/decoder is realized easily based on the universal personal computers anciently, it is not special and low efficiency. Presently video encoder/decoder based on digital signal processor (DSP) becomes more and more. DSP is a microprocessor with the special configuration. It has special hardware multiplicative devices, adopts pipelining extensively, provides special DSP instructions, and can realize diversified digital signal processing arithmetic rapidly. Video encoder/decoder based on DSP is applied flexibly, and its development period is short, furthermore it is prone to upgrade and update. TMS320DM642 is a C6000 series' high-powered DSP produced by TI company. Its disposal ability is 4800MIPS, and it has very abundant peripheral equipment interface. TMS320DM642 has not only operation flexibility owned by high speed controller, but also digital disposal ability owned by array processor. It is a perfect platform to make the digital video/audio disposal application.This paper introduces the pivotal technique adopted by the H.264 standard. Then it introduces the research and analysis to the primary module arithmetic in the H.264 encoder based on the PC platform. After transplanting the H.264 encoder to the TMS320DM642 hardware platform, we realized the H.264 encoder with D1 size based on the TMS320DM642. Combining with the characteristic of TMS320DM642, this paper introduces some optimization methods and optimization strategies based on the hardware platform, and the function and effect of these methods and strategies in the optimization process of the H.264 encoder. Finally, it summarizes the whole optimization process. It may provide reference to the software development based on the TI DSP, especially the TMS320DM642 platform for the future.The first chapter of this paper is exordium educing the task of this paper. The second chapter introduces the H.264 video encoder technique, emphasizes the pivotal technique adopted by the H.264 standard. The third chapter introduces the realization and optimization of the H.264 encoder based on PC. The fourth chapter introduces the TMS320DM642 hardware platform, including the structure of CPU, the CCS integrate development environment and so on. The fifth chapter introduces the realization and optimization of the H.264 encoder based on the TMS320DM642 hardware platform, and then analyzes and summarizes the result of the optimization.
