H.264 is the latest international video coding standard. It has remarkably improved the coding efficiency compared to previous standards. Therefore, H.264 will be widely used in many areas in the near future. However, it is too complex to be applied in real-time applications. How to develop the real-time video encoder under the limited hardware resources environment is extremely a challenge work.The main tasty of this paper is to introduce how to develop and optimize the H.264 encoder on the TMS320DM642 hardware platform. The source program adopted is the encoder part of the official JM 61e. First, focus on the H.264 algorithm adjustments including twice slice partition, the most time-consuming motion estimation algorithm and real-time interpolation for 1/4 pixel.Then, aiming at the TMS320DM642 hardware platform, optimize the H.264 encoder further according to the intrinsics, sowfware pipeline and linear assembly language,and EDMA and two-level internal memory structure.Through these efforts, it achieves that the real-time coding of 768kbps CIF-format imge on the TMS320DM642. After decoding the video image has high quality both at the objective and subjective factor.
