Visual assembly simulation can preassembly the product at a design stage, and verify and improve the assembly process. It can also dramatically show the assemblability of the product, therefore, the efficiency of assembly can be improved and the time and cost of assembly can also be reduced.To begin with, the paper analyzes the deficiency of the assembly function of the main CAD system, presents the function demands of digital assembly simulation system and the necessity of secondary development for main CAD system.Then, the key technologies of the system are emphatically researched. First of all, the top-down design technology is introduced in brief; this technology can dramatically reduce the unnecessarily repetitious works at design stage, which makes most of the recourses of the enterprise, greatly improving the design efficiency and reducing research period of new product. Then the assembly model for top-down design technology is researched. This model can supports from concept design to part design, and integrally pass the parameters of different assemblies, assembly levels and assembly information.Secondly, assembly process planning (ASP) is analyzed. A level-interlinked model is presented to interpret the level relation between the assemblies, and order relation of the parts on the same level. An algorithm based on this model can realize automatic planning with too much manual work.Then the paper presents a practical method combined with manually interactive and automatic reasoning to generate assembly path. It is under "disassemble feasible assemble feasible" premise to obtain the disassembly sequence first, then reverse this sequence to obtain the assembly sequence.Then the paper introduced the realization technology of automation assembly and put forward a kind of matrix to describe the movements of the parts, which can easily support the realization of digital assembly simulation. And it raises a kind of algorithm of swift interference checking based on envelops bounding box decomposition, which improves the accuracy and efficiency of the algorithm.Finally, the paper introduces the developing process of the system and takes the key components of double-reduction reducer as an example to carry on verification according to the Pro/E based digital assembly simulation system.
