Marshalling station is a key function part in China's railway freight transportation and likewise, wireless shunting communication is an important and busy one in all kinds of railway wireless communications. However, the current and mainly-used system is based on analog trunk mode, which has poor efficiency and reliability. This blocked the development of nowadays marshalling station and has become a bottleneck of its efficiency and scale.GSM-R is a world-wide advanced and railway oriented wireless communication system. It is derived from the widespread GSM system and added many features for railway schedule communication. China has officially confirmed the adoption of GSM-R by the end of 2000 for the future railway communication.Porting marshalling communication function to GSM-R system not only can overcome the analog trunk's deficiency in shunting application, but more important, can unify the two kinds of wireless communications, shunting and train scheduling. The marshalling business process in China is distinct from that in Europe, therefore, the solution to the porting work should also be unique. This paper, after introduction of GSM-R and the status quo of current marshalling station, put forward a creative solution, which can better meet the requirements of wireless communication in China's marshalling station, especially the shunting communication.Because the design work of GSM-R handset is key to the whole project, the focus of this paper will be also on the handset. First of all, according to the system scheme and business requirements, we outline the related specifications for the handset. After that, we do the type select for main modules in the handset, including processor, Flash, LCD, battery and etc. And then the detailed design scheme of the hardware is given about the peripherals circuit, communication module circuit, voice circuit and power management. We are more dwelling on the ideas of some circuit design as well as on every part's difficulties. Sample of our handset design has passed necessary tests and reached the requirements and specifications. It's a great milestone on the way of porting the marshalling business to GSM-R.
