This paper studies the communication protocols of underwater acoustic networks based on energy-efficiency. Via simulation, a small underwater acoustic network is designed. After researching the impacts of network protocols to energy consumption, the realization of energy optimum communication protocols which are befitting underwater are discussed. At first, the significance and research focus of underwater acoustic networks are discussed. Based on the summarizing the present research states which is in-country and overseas, especially the research states of energy efficiency, the main idea of the paper is put forward.Secondly, the architecture of underwater acoustic networks and function and designing objective of the different layers of communication protocols are discussed, with emphasis on the energy consumption within underwater acoustic network realization. Than, some solving ways are apposed.Thirdly, based on the study above, some protocols in the data link layer and the network layer of the underwater acoustic network are analyzed and compared, and an energy-optimum protocol stack for underwater acoustic network is designed without physical layer. The S-MAC protocol is used in the media access controlling, and the automatic repeat request (ARQ) is selected for the data errors detecting, at the same time the DSR protocol is considered in the networks routing.Afterwards, an OPNET model is built to analyze the performance of the network designed via choosing befitting measurement, and S-MAC protocol which this paper selected and IEEE802.11 are compared. At result, this protocol stack is energy-efficient and accessible. At last, the paper summarizes the content of this paper.
