With the development of computer networks and the expansion of university, network equipments and users are getting more and more, network behavior is getting much complex, therefore real-time monitor and management is needed urgently to ensure network can run normally and effectively. Network topology discovery as the basis and core technique of network management must discover the network equipment information and connection between equipments accurately,effectively and fast, which is demonstrated in graphics and provides convenience for network management.In this study, many kinds of topology discovery methods were researched, including protocols,tools and arithmetic of topology discovery. The study analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of logical topology methods, put forward physical topology methods, and finally according to our campus own features choose the method mixed of physical and logical topology to divide the network equipments in campus into backbone network equipments (including routers and switches) and host machines.For backbone network equipments CDP protocol was adopted to complete the topology discovery within the campus network to the floors (which can provide convenience for fault location and traffic analysis); For host machines PING tool based on ICMP protocol was adopted to realize the scan of host machines, which strengthened the integrity of topology discovery system.
