Accurate network topology information is crucial for both network management and performance prediction.Especially,knowledge of the up-to-date physical(i.e, layer-2)topology of an Ethernet network is precondition for both network management and performance, for example, reactive and proactive reaource management, server siting , event correlation ect. Given the dynamic nature of today's IP network, keeping track of topology information manually is a daunting task. Thus, effective algorithms for automatically discovering network topology, espesically physical topology. In this peper, describing the algorithm not only logical layer topology, but also give the physical layer's, our algorithm can discover heterogeneous Ethernet network comprising multiple subnet as well as "dump" element. Our algorithm rely on standard SNMP MIB information that is widely supported in modern IP networks and require no modifications to the operating system software running on elements or hosts. The algorithm have be implemented in the condition of establishing, and can get the correctly experimental data. It prove that our algorithm can get the network topology of logical layer(lay-3) as well as with single-subnet and multisubnet physical layer.
