The Internet has become the most widely used network in our life. To maintain thenetwork running and to sustain the various transmissions in network is the network protocol.The different structure of network needs the different network protocol to sustain itsmechanism. In one word, if there is no protocol, there is no network.The IP protocol has become the leading protocol in the network communication. Most ofthe multimedia applications adopt the IP protocol as the bear the weight of there bottomprotocol in network layer. In an IP packet, each field of the different heads of every field areexist redundancies, especially the corresponding fields in a sequence packet streams. Thevarious header packets protocols spend a lot of bandwidth. Especially in some effectivepayloads comparatively smaller transmissions, the larger header brings a longer delay.Therefore if we transmit data, voice or other information in a congestion links must compressits header of protocol. Usually, adopting the technology of header compression can save thesource of the bandwidth in some multimedia channels. It is an important method to adopt themechanism of compressing the IP header.The ROHC is a scalability profile that designed to work well in a links that havesignificant bit error rates and long round-trip times, such as radio links for cellular IPtelephony. It adopts the method of connection to wipe off the relationship in each field of apacket and the corresponding fields in sequence packets. So it can minish the IP header andother packet's header. The ROHC is lying between the network layer and link layer in an OSI standard protocol. It can obtain the compression gain through setting up the information ofstates at the each port of the links, namely the compressor's port and decompressor's port.This paper firstly introduces the basic concept and technology of ROHC, and thendetailedly analyzes the content, including the compression and decompression states, mode ofoperation, packet formats and so on. With that an implementation of ROHC over PPPoE isgiven. And the author analyze the results of simulation by dint of the simulation tool—OPNET, validate that the ROHC protocol can improve the performance of the system.
