In complicated network topology, routers play an important role, and the routing protocols which run on routers are keys to assure Internet to run normally and efficiently. Therefore, performances of routing protocols are important in terms of network efficiency. On the basis of illustrating the present situation and tendency of network,in this paper we pay more attention on analysis of mechanism and performances of two interior gateway protocols—RIP and OSPF.RIP protocol is based on the distance vector algorithm, while OSPF protocol is based on the link state algorithm. The important work of this paper is making comparison between RIP and OSPF in terms of pattern, neighbor discovery, encapsulation, path characteristic, response of changes, routing computation, transmitting of routing data,robust/reliability and security,as well as making elementary analysis of security leaks.According to the stated conclusion, with OPNET we design a network simulation model whose scale is 10km×10km,and we configure traffic and IP addresses, and then we select the performance parameters of routing protocol network convergence, protocol traffic, network delay, link fail and link restart,in the end,we draw the following conclusion in accord with simulation results:RIP protocol is suitable for the small scaled, simple topology, low performance demand and easy using network environment, while OSPF fit for the large scaled, complicated topology and high performance demand network environment, therefore,we should select routing protocol according to network traits.
