Along with the in-depth exploration and investigation to the natural problem and the social issues, the demand of computation power increases quickly. Meanwhile, though various resources on the Internet have gotten an explosive growth, they are not made full exploitation. The emergence of internet-based Virtual Computing Environment (iVCE) makes it possible to integrate distributed and heterogeneous computing resources. As foundation of managing those resources, directory service which provides services to publish and search for resources, is a pivotal research domain in iVCE.This dissertation begins with a brief introduction of the definition of the iVCE and directory service, as well as the state-of-the- art of the relative domestic and abroad research activities. Then, the dissertation proposed a Simple Distributed Directory Services system, which is composed of several Local Directory Servers. But On the further analysis and testing, we find several critical problems need to resolve. So we addressed a P2P-based Self-adapted Directory Services (PBSDS) to provide services of publishing and searching resources, which is an extended chord model. Finally, we analyze the performance of PBSDS and prove that PBSDS can control Single Point of Failure as well as balance system load.
