Since the digital representation of raw images/videos requires a huge amount of data, it is common activity to compress them for storage and transmission purposes. Previously, the only two criterions judging coding algorithms were compression efficiency and reconstruction quality. How to obtain best quality at lowest bit-rate was the focus that all coding standards put emphasis on.Recently, along with the prevalence of Internet and progress of mobile communication, a number of multimedia services such as video-conference, videophone, network TV, mobile TV, telemedicine and digital library, etc., had welled up. These new services asked some new features from image/video coding standards other than high efficiency and good quality, includingPossible to design systems with minimum latency;Exact bit-rate control;Better error resilience;Lossless and lossy compression in one codestream;Scalability - dynamic bit-rate /quality/resolution control possible;Security, copyright protection.JPEG 2000 is a new generation image/video coding standard. It adopted wavelet transform instead of block-based DCT transform, not only solved the block artefacts problem that other standards could not avoid, but also achieved all the features listed above. This is due to wavelet transform has a multiresolution analysis ability which conforms to human vision system. Most features needed in modern applications can be naturally achieved by wavelet coding structure. In the theoretical analysis, JPEG 2000 has many advantages to other image/video coding standards. But it has not been popularized as quickly as expected. The reason, on the one hand because of its late introduction, the market had been largely occupied by other standards; and on the other hand, the majority of manufacturers did not give adequate supports to bring forward many mature and cheap products/solutions. This thesis aims to design a complete JPEG 2000 hardware codec system, which could embody the advantages of JPEG 2000 standard. This system should also be small, low power, low cost, interfaces ready and easy to operate, so it could meet the requests of some practical applications. The contents included in the thesis are:(1) Study and research on main algorithms in JPEG 2000, including wavelet transform, multiresolution analysis and EBCOT.(2) Overall scheme of the system. Block diagram is depicted based on requirements analysis. Devices and components are chosen to meet targets set.(3) Modular design. Schematic and PCB design is done using EDA tools. Each module is installed and debugged.(4) Preparation of system software, including drivers, firmware, as well as the overall control procedures.(5) Summaries of all the work.
