Citizen journalism is different from public journalism (or civic journalism)------awell known academic concept. When the world entering the new century, citizen journalism enters our horizons quietly, and quickly becomes a non-professional newsform------distinguished from professional journalism. It subverts traditional journalism inthe mechanism, the reported areas, as well as the theoretical basis. The unlimited power, which is from the outside of professional journalism, is becoming more and more powerful. The citizen who had being excluded from press has opened the closed door for the first time and into the 'sacred' 'hall'.As domestic scholars have rarely comprehensive and systematic research on citizen journalism. Therefore, this paper intends to 'use the little to get the big'. The paper is on the basis of foreign, particularly the United States, U.K. and Korea's citizen journalism practice and theory. The structure of this paper is divided to the development and the causes of citizen journalism, the characteristics and defines of citizen journalism (including the differences between citizen journalism and public journalism), as well as the reflection and prospect to citizen journalism.
