Construction And Application Of Virtual Reality Geographic Information Systems

Geographic Information System (GIS) as an interdisciplinary discipline is the result of the development of geography, surveying, cartology, remote sensing, graphics, has nowadays become more and more mature and socialized.Virtual Reality Geographic Information System has become one of the hotspot of current GIS theory and application of research. Virtual Reality Geographic Information System (VRGIS) is a combination of geographic information systems and virtual reality (VR) technology. Thus it is a new generation of the Geographic Information System. This paper discussed the Virtual Reality Geographic Information Systems and related technologies involved in the concept definition, characteristics, classification, key technologies, the main software applications and development at home and abroad in a detailed presentation; also analyzed the necessity of the combination of VR and GIS. Moreover, it discussed about the whole system design and development process, including the user interface, system requirements, system architecture design, system development model, and other related technologies. Meanwhile set Nanjing shipyard ruins park as the study area, according to the actual needs of users, designed and implemented the Virtual Reality Geographic Information System to this area. Based on Virtual Reality Geographic Information System technology, which includes hree-dimensional spatial data access, three-dimensional data model, digital terrain models and digital elevation model data, as well as three-dimensional data's detailed level model and three-dimensional data visualization, with professional Virtual Reality modeling software MultiGen Creator constructed a three-dimensional environment of the park.
