As the promotion of informationization of the society, the quantity of information is getting larger and larger. How we can ensure that the information be fully utilized is an urgent problem to be solved. Besides, because of the diversity of the form of information and the emergence of a great deal of semi-structured and non-structured information, the new solution is needed so as to support the management of all kinds of information on heterogeneous systems in uniform way. The evolvement of information system from data management, document management to content mangement, is a way for solving these problems. At present, content management is becoming one of the most important research areas. After several years' development, the technologies related to content management are getting mature; however, its value has not yet been fully utilizied, because of the shortage of efficient solution of integrating the information on heterogeneous systems.XML technology provides the effective support for the share and exchange of information on heterogeneous systems, besides, XML also provides strong support for the expression of semi-structured or non-structured information.Metadata plays an important role in content management; it provides the support for the discovery and retrieval of network information resources. At present, many metadata standards are widely recognized and applied, which provides the basis for the metadata design, however, it also requires to extend or tailor the stardard for specific application. This thesis embarks on the definition of metadata, combines metadata model with content management, and conducts the research on XML-based content management and release.Firstly, this thesis analyzes the current situation of the research on content management by conducting a series of analysis on the unsolved problems exising on content management, then presents a solution for content management and release. The goal is to support the management and release of different forms of information on heterogeneous systems in a uniform way, in the enterprise environment. Then, this thesis analyzes and compares several influential metadata standards, takes the simple DC application schema of Dublin Core Element Set (DC) as the basis of metadata design; presents the concept of metadata model for the description of the properties of content; analyzes how to store metadata model in Oracle database, as well as how to query and release xml document based on XQuery. Finally, this thesis designs and implements a prototype of XML-based content management and release system.
