The rapid development of automobile industry results in traffic jams. The key to solving the problem lies in traffic signal coordinated control which reduces delays and stops of vehicles in order to improve capacity and service level of intersections. On the basis of analyzing problems in transportation, this paper designs an improved traffic signal coordinated control algorithm. The research mainly includes three parts below:Firstly, with the analysis of traffic evaluation indexes which are widely used at present, the concept of improved evaluation index is brought forward with its computational method. The improved traffic evaluation index combines delays and stops of vehicles by two weighted coefficients. As it is capable of evaluating the traffic situation at intersections adaptively, the improved traffic evaluation index can well meet the need of traffic changes.Secondly, by investigating existing traffic systems, an improved traffic signal coordinated control algorithm is put forward, including phase design and signal timing. The improved traffic evaluation index is chosen to judge the crowded level of intersections. In addition, different measures are taken by this paper to control traffic signal under different traffic situations. Compared with other methods, the improved algorithm, which aims at reducing delays and stops of vehicles, is able to improve control efficiency and achieve better performance.Thirdly, JAVA is adopted as an effective means to traffic signal coordinated control simulation. The object-oriented character of JAVA helps to set up a series of traffic models, such as depart model, acceleration model, deceleration model, car following model and so on. Moreover, threads are created to simulate traffic situations at intersections. Finally performance of the new scheme is analyzed by comparison with other algorithms as well. The simulation results show that the new algorithm is advantageous to achieve better performance with less average delays and stops per vehicle at intersections compared with method of constant signal cycle. To sum up, according to the theory of traffic flow and coordinated control, research on traffic signal coordinated control has been carried out by this paper in order to provide a new solution to traffic jams.
