The Bamboo Slips were main character media before paper was invented. The Bamboo Slips preserved rich historical and cultural information, which is precious ancient culture heritage of Chinese people; on the other hand, the characters on Bamboo Slips contained abundant historical content and various handwriting, that represented a set of important process of Chinese ancient handwriting's development in brush pen, which is national artistic treasure of Chinese handwriting in brush pen. Therefore, the research and application of characters' restoration in the image of Bamboo Slips have great meaning in history research and cultural art. Cultural relic's restoration is indispensable and significant work in cultural relic's protection. Nevertheless, The Bamboo Slips go through a long time in the ground before excavated, additionally The Bamboo Slips were made by bamboos or woods which belong to perishable organic compounds, so that many excavated Bamboo Slips appeared character desquamation, ink marks diffusion, handwriting blur, strokes rupture and so on, and greatly increased difficulty in information's acquisition and cultural relic's restoration.Based on a number of analysis and experiment on the image of Bamboo Slips, this paper put forward a set of suited methods which combined with digital image process, computer aided design and virtual reality applied in character restoration in the image of Bamboo Slips.(1)Initial images of Bamboo Slips were color-scale image which were saved in Jpg format, but character information(such as the magnitude ,shape and location of character ) is main research object of this paper, therefore, Initial images contained a great deal of redundant color information, at the time, many classical image process algorithms were based on gray-scale image, so this paper consider that it's very necessary to firstly transform color-scale image to gray-scale image.(2)Based on a great deal of algorithms' research and experiment, this paper discover that it's infeasible to segment character pixel set from background pixel set in space-domain or frequency-domain, on the other hand, this paper considered that character's outline is also main information of the character on the condition that it can't absolutely segment character pixel set, and it's a feasible method to segment character's outline information. Therefore, this paper introduce Canny edge detection algorithm to extract character's outline information. Compared with other same type algorithm, Canny algorithm contain particular advantage such as correct detection, precise location and single-pixel response.(3) Based on a great deal of algorithms' research and experiment, as a result of the fact of the actual damage characteristic , this paper considered that it is infeasible to except to design excellent algorithms to achieve automatic restoration by computer, and also concluded that human-computer interaction is a convenient, replaceable and effective method. Single-pixel edge curve can be completely restoration by pencil and eraser tools in image process. So this paper implemented secondary development of the open source project of ImageJ, and designed friendly human-computer interaction interface based on AWT system of Java.(4)After restoration of character's outline curve by human-computer interaction, we achieved whole outline curve. The next step is to fill the outline of character. This paper firstly introduce Connected Component Labeling algorithm to distinguish each relation of independent close curve, and based on the handwriting characteristic of characters, concluded the rule of the outline filling. The result of character restoration no only kept down original handwriting characteristic, but also achieved the digital record, digital management and digital exhibit of characters on Bamboo Slips.(5)In order to satisfy the need of cultural relic's exhibition, the final step was to achieve the restoration of Bamboo Slips, which were the media of character. And virtual reality technique had been steadily and extensive applied on historic site's virtual restoration and virtual exhibition, and also virtual reality technique went by the name of "the vision technique in archaeology", therefore, this paper introduce virtual reality technique to model virtual object, design virtual scene and achieve 3D virtual browse and dynamic interaction.In other ways, this paper focuses on combining theory and practice, aims at application, based on the research of this paper, design a aided archeological research software on Bamboo Slips for archaeologist in Changsha Jiandu museum. Practice proved that, on one hand, algorithms combined with human-computer interaction provided with some advantage such as operated sententiously, applied reliably and restored effectively. The algorithms of digital image process remained mostly intrinsic characteristic, with human-computer interaction, archaeologist could only easily daub and sketch the outline of the character based on human's knowledge about character, the result restored by human-computer interaction is greatly resemble the original character; On the other hand, virtual reality have good effect in character's virtual restitute, which satisfied the need of museum to exhibit Bamboo Slips to people in effective and low-cost way.
