The research on RCS reduction of microstrip patch antennas is carried out from the angle of the combination of resonant modes and the surface current distribution on the patch. Firstly, the resonant modes which have a unique relationship with the radiation performance and RCS response of a microstrip patch antenna are analyzed. Based on the surface current distribution on the patch corresponding to the resonant modes, the effects of cutting slots in the patch and the ground plane on the radiation performance and scattering properties of microstrip patch antenna are discussed. By properly controlling resonant modes, a microstrip patch antenna with good radiation performance and low RCS is designed.Secondly, the radiation and scattering properties of microstrip planar array composed of elements with low RCS are investigated. It can be seen from the numerical results that cutting slots in the patch can reduce some RCS peaks of the array, but there still exist some RCS peaks that cannot be reduced. In order to overcome this problem, the radiation and scattering properties of conformal microstrip array with slot cut in the patch are studied and finally the conflict between good radiation performance and low RCS is solved to a certain extent.
