The whole name of WiMAX is World Interoperability for Microwave Access. IEEE 802.16 protocol series define the PHY and MAC interface for WiMAX air interface. WiMAX is a type of brand new technology, which is purposed to provide an IP based and end-to-end Qos secured access layer to metropolitan access network. By the advantage of OFDM technology, it has significant performance in NLOS ability, coverage and bandwidth. Its MAC embedded IP Qos mechanism guarantees the carrier of customized service. In the other hand, its nomadic and full mobility orientation make it significant in BWA area. WiMAX is a promising technology for the characters of broadband, wireless and all IP.GSM stands for Global System of Mobile Communication. It is a standard raised by ETSI in 1992. It uses digital communication technology and uniformed network standard, which prove the quality of communication and the extension of new service for end users. By June, 2006, there were more than 2 billion GSM mobile users, covering 1/3 of population worldwide. GSM technology has occupied more than 80% of the whole digital communication area. According to the statistics from MII, there were more than 200 million GSM users in China till the end of 2006, which made it the largest operational mobile network.In GSM network, it is very difficult for Abis cable layout in rural area or specific places for mobile operators, thus it is mandatory to use wireless transmission scheme instead of wire lines in such condition. By comparing with various access technologies, a new proposal has been raised that WiMAX system combining with TDMoIP protocol converter can be utilized to GSM Abis interface transmission.For the reason that no experience and protocol can be followed for such a new solution, theory study and primary lab validation is mandatory to assure the feasibility and accountability. Finally, field trial in Beijing rural area was carried out which proves the reliability of the solution ultimately.The research and trial verifies the feasibility of the solution in different modes and environment. Besides that, a large amount of test data has been retrieved. Consequently, new concept and essential reference have been provided to the network construction of this category.
