With the fast development of electric equipment, it was necessity to make all the devices connect to Internet among world companies. Through embedded Serial-Ethernet Server, serial data stream transfer via TCP/IP provides a way for existing serial equipments to obtain network connection function. Thereby, the restriction in transfer distance and reliability of the serial communication will be avoided effectively.ARM9 MCU AT91ARM9200 and network interface chip LXT971ALE were adopted in the Serial-Ethernet Server, which Linux operation system was supported. It transforms data coming from RS-232 interface into TCP/IP format and then sends traditional serial data to Internet, or in the opposite way.The main achievements could be summarized as follows:First, the holistic development scheme for Serial-Ethernet Server based on the analysis of both hardware and software design was proposed.Second, communication between serial equipments and remote host computer was realized .meanwhile, in order to insure data transfer accuracy and timing, special data transfer strategy was adopted.Third, server and client modes were supported respectively for different network connections environments, with the function of systemparameter online setup.Fourth, an appropriate software platform was accomplished for this Serial-Ethernet Server through modification and compiling of Linux kernel and file system. Basic API functions were developed for the system's further research.
