Personal computers are gaining a more and more central role in our daily life. They are used to view images or DVDs, to listen to music, to communicate with others via email or instant messaging. Personal computers are absolutely necessarily in our daily life. But most of these tasks are done by standalone applications. This makes is almost impossible to link pieces of information across application borders. The Semantic Web is an extension of current Web in which information is given well-defined meaning and makes computers and people work in cooperation. Through transfer the Semantic Web to desktop computers, users can access resource in their computers with speediness and convenience. Information is displayed and access through a unified way regardless of the application that created it. We call this functionality Semantic Desktop. In this paper, we introduce a way to build semantic desktop and implement a prototype. In this paper, we have researched the principle and related technology of Semantic Desktop, analyzed some problems in building Semantic Desktop system, and given solutions. Based on the research and analyses, we proposed the concept of Semantic Directory, and applied it in our prototype system-OntoBook .At the last of this paper, we particular introduce how to implement OntoBook. This system has changed the directory oriented way we manage resources in our PC, and replace it with semantic oriented way. It improves the efficiency we search and locate resources. It also can create relations between different types of resources, and users would treat their personal affairs more efficiently. Meanwhile, users can discover new knowledge via semantic association.
