Development Of Characteristic DataBase For Library Collection

Libraries are facing both challenges and developing opportunities as new information technologies are widely used. With unique, localized collections, libraries are motivated to combine digitized collections with other e-recourse which has full copyrights to build an authoritative, easy to use characteristic database.Furthermore, libraries will use computer, communication and storage technology to maximize fulfillments of end users' demand on information.The author used a true project in her library as an example, describe the current situation of library digitization in China, explain the goal, purpose and content of building an distinctive characteristic database, analyze problems during the progress, and discuss basic theories, principles on topic selection, SOPs(Standard Operating Procedure) and technical support when building the database.The author used Delphi to develop an easy-to-use information collection and broadcast platform based on Oracle after analyzing library business features and customer needs . When implement this system, dramatic improvement on service efficiency and quality are observed. The utilization rate to library collections is also increased.
