Research On Personalized Information Environment In Digital Library Portal

Digital library has gone through the first generation based on digital resource, and now is developing from the second generation based on integrated service to the third generation centered on user information activity which represents as portal. Nowadays, some researching programs about "portal" are developed and many commercialized products spring out in our country and overseas, but, totally speaking, research on digital library is still a developing issue. With the promotion of new technology, portal service abilities are rapidly improving, higher level information requests of users are encouraging. All of that promotes the advancement of digital library. In order to construct a digital library portal which could fulfill its "specific" users' requests, book intelligence organizations and information service departments need to do more. They should not only focus on portal products, use for reference existent experiences and technology, but also fully consider aimed users' reality demands , organize resources based on users' demands characters, design service systems according to users' behavior. That is to say, only by representing "centering on users", digital library could "the longer, the newer".Beginning with the concept of digital library portal, this dissertation summarizes "user-centered" connotation, analyzes characteristics of user, users' demands and users' activities, and analyzes service capacity of current portals. Based on these discussions and analysis, this dissertation concludes the advantages and disadvantages of portals centered about users. Based on current situation, it points out that user-centered digital library portal should supply users with proper tools and conditions support their information need, establish a bridge for information source, channel and recipient by simulating the real process that people get information they need. This can help users use resources and service systems supplied by portal, and help them establish personalized information environment themselves. This is the right method to resolve the contradiction between the popularized service and specialized need.After further analyzing, the dissertation points out that the current portal already includes large number of resource systems and service systems, which are two important elements of information source and channels to set up personalized information environment, and provides users with tools that can be used to individually organize, communicate, retrieve, filter and push information. It has been equipped with basic conditions to set up user's personalized information environment, but these conditions are not enough, there are many shortcomings such as limited capacity of organizing resource, limited channel for users to communicate, single service provider and low-grade filtered information.At last, aiming at these shortcomings, this dissertation brings in ideas from personal digital library system, web tag system and collaborative filtering system. Based on others' research achievements, it advances a personalized information environment system plan that supports users to set up personalized information environment under the background of digital library portal.
