The backbone network is an important part of the Tactical Internet, which mainly adopts mobile Ad Hoc networks technique and is designed to provide efficient delivery of situational awareness, command and control data. The backbone network is characterized of agility, mobility, quickly organizing, easily extending and so on. Under the backbone network circumstances, the routing protocols and quality of service models have been researched in this thesis.Firstly, the thesis analyzes a variety of protocols of mobile Ad Hoc network from three viewpoints, then proposes a novel location-based and bandwidth-aware routing algorithm named GPSR-B to replace location-based routing algorithm, which will achieve better routing performance in packet delivery success rate and throughput compared with GPSR protocol.Secondly, the thesis has simulated GPSR, DSDV and AODV protocols according to idiographic performance demands under the backbone network circumstances in detail. Some factors that influence the performance of backbone network such as bandwidth, speed, and communication distance are analyzed. At the same time, a few of correlative suggestions on designing backbone routing protocols are summarized. Finally, aiming at the limitation that the stateless wireless Ad Hoc network model does not take the performance of best effort traffic into full consideration originally , the rate control scheme of the SWAN model is modified. The results of simulations under the backbone network circumstances demonstrate that the modified SWAN not only enhances the performance of real-time traffic but also that of the best-effort traffic.
