Mobile Ad hoc Networks is wireless multi-hop networks, consisting of a collection of mobile nodes equipped with transmitting and receiving devices. Without a fixed infrastructure or a administrative support, node serves as a relay to realize multihop communication in MANETs. Multimedia applications become more and more popular. Cost-effective resolution of QoS issue is essencial for widespread general use of MANETs. This article is based on Nationnal High Tech Development Project (863 project)-Research on key technologies in Mobile Ad hoc Networks based on 3G technology, focusing on QoS routing in MANETs.The first part of this article presents the guide line of routing protocol design, and gives an overview of research in this area.In the second part of this article the specialty of QoS issue in MANETs is analized. Then 3 key problems in QoS routing are presented: the choice of routing metric, the maintenance of link states information and the maintenance of QoS route. At last 3 important QoS routing algrithem are introduced. The practical environment of MANETs is complex, which makes it difficult to simulate the working with software simulator .A MANETs testbed system is to be constructed. The third part of this article introduces the design of the system and routing protocol, discuss how the proactive and the reactive protocol works on it .The implementation of DSDV is described in detail. This testbed has passed field test.Suppporting real-time application is important in MANETs .QoS routing will not only setup a route but also explore a route with enough bandwidth . In wireless communication environment, it is difficult to calculate the reservable bandwidth of a path because modes share the bandwidth with its neighbors and the bandwidth of a link is asymmetry. In the fourth part of this article , "share bandwidth node set" is defined and with it , reservable bandwidth of a route is calculated . Based on AODV, a routing protocol using bandwidth as main metric is designed. And the performance is studied and analyzed in Network Simulator-2.The last part of this article is about the design of routing module in system "Model MANETs using key technologies of 3G communication system" and the implemetation of routing is introduced in detail. Now the data routing module has passed system test.
